Two people from Phulbari area in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills (WGH) district were arrested after they allegedly strangled their ‘friend’ before dumping his body in the Jinjiram River near Phulbari.
The shocking incident took place on April 23 though the body of the 18-year-old victim was only discovered on April 24 by some fishermen.
According to police, yesterday evening, April 24, at about 5:30 pm information was received that a dead body was recovered by the villagers of Kurkarpaahar, WGH from the river Jinjiram on the Assam – Meghalaya border. The victim was identified as Alom Mondol (18) on the same village.
Upon inquiry by the police, it was learnt that on the preceding evening at about 7:30 pm, Alom went along with one Sofial Sheikh (18) and Malu Sheikh (24). The duo were residents of Bashmura in Borkolia Shershow under Fakirganj PS in Assam.
Alon however did not return that night and it was only at about 3:30 pm was his body discovered by fishermen in the river. The body allegedly was hidden under a boat and only surfaced when fishermen moved the boat to fish.
An angry group of villagers there after caught the two suspects in the murder and were about to assault them but were stopped by village elders who later handed over the two suspects to police under Phulbari station.
The body of the victim was later sent to Tura Civil Hospital for post mortem while the two accused were taken into custody.
“All formalities, including a medical exam have been conducted on the two suspects. Apparently the motive for the murder was an enmity with the victim by his ‘friend’ Sofial who was looking for an opportunity to take revenge and murder him. An inquiry into the matter is currently on. The victim was killed by strangulation,” said the superintendent of police, WGH, Dr MGR Kumar.
