Tura: A 22 year old mentally challenged man fatally shot a 65 year old woman in the village of Old Bhaitbari in West Garo Hills. The incident took place at about 4 pm yesterday, June 28.

The 65 year old victim, Salam Bewa, worked as a maid in the house of the suspect. She was from Nayagaon, Old Bhaitbari as was the suspect, identified as Habibur Rahman.

According to police sources, the suspect along with his entire family has fled immediately after the incident.

“She was shot using an SBBL gun belonging to the father of the suspect, Nurul Islam. She was hit in the eye and succumbed on the spot,” said superintendent of police, WGH, Dr MGR Kumar.

After a thorough search of the place of occurrence, police were able to find the murder weapon (SBBL gun) along with the cartridge inside. Some more live and used ammunition along with a certificate of mental illness of the accused were also recovered from the almirah in the house.

“We are doing our utmost to nab him with an alert sent out. All the items (found at the site) have been taken into custody after all legal formalities were observed. A case in the matter has also been filed,” added Dr Kumar.
