TURA | Feb 12, 2019:
In yet another case of dacoity in Garo Hills, 5 people were injured which included 3 women after they were assaulted by a group of armed dacoits in the village of Rongchandalgre under Phulbari PS in West Garo Hills.
The criminals also looted an amount of Rs 2.5 lakh from the house during the gruesome episode.
The incident took place at about midnight apparently taking advantage of the load shedding that was in effect in the area at the time.
Two of victims of the dacoity, Rajen Marak and his son, Bikram Marak are said to be in serious state after they were beaten by the criminals with rods and sticks. Another three victims, all of them women, sustained minor injuries. They have been identified as Silkame M Marak (daughter), Chengche M Marak and Samantha M Marak.
According to sources, the dacoits came in a black Scorpio vehicle to the village late at night and entered the house of Rajen forcefully. They then proceeded to loot the house and the money and beat up everyone in sight with iron rods and sticks. The dacoits were allegedly armed with daggers when they entered.
“It was a group of about 10-12 criminals and they attacked the family after looting them. The criminals came with 8 mm and 100 mm rods and daggers. When some neighbours came to help, even they were thrashed. The house of Rajen is close to the main road which may be one of the reasons why he was attacked,” said a local on condition of anonymity.
Apparently, Marak had recently sold his arecanut plantation and had about Rs 3 lakh in the house which seems to have been the target of the attack.
Locals also said that house that was attacked was far from other villages and the injured were rushed to the Phulbari PHC. The father – son duo that was attacked is said to be serious state.
Confirming the incident, the superintendent of police, West Garo Hills, Dr MGR Kumar said that the case was under investigation and was being looked at minutely.
“We are working on a few leads and are hopeful of a breakthrough in the case,” stated the police chief.
