A day before the state goes to polls, the surveillance team and flying squad of the election department on Monday morning seized Rs 38 lakh and 67 thousand from a brand new vehicle (white Scorpio) in Lad Smit, Shillong.

According to officials in the election department, the cash was seized from one person identified as L Lamare hailing from Mookaiaw village in West Jaintia Hills district.

It was informed that preliminary investigation suggests that the person from whom the cash was found is a coal trader and assumed that the money was not meant for any election purposes. “However, we are yet to establish the fact till now. The matter is still under investigation,” said the official source.

It may be mentioned that the seizure was made two days after officials seized cash amounting to around Rs 12 lakh in Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday.
