SHILLONG | August 14, 2019:
Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday said that the decision on the Speaker’s post will have to be decided by all the partners in the MDA.
“When it comes to the Speaker’s post, it cannot be an individual decision,” Sangma said while talking to reporters here today.
According to him, it will not be right on his part to give his personal opinion on this matter despite being the chairman of the MDA.
“Each and every partner in the MDA will have their own opinion. But the MDA as a group will take a consensus decision on the Speaker’s post” he said. Sangma also said that the meeting of the MDA will be held after the Independence Day celebrations. “The meeting might probably be held sometime next week,” Chief Minister said.
When asked about the request of the UDP to support their candidate for the Shella bye-election, he said that the decision of supporting the candidate of the UDP will also depend on all the coalition partners.
Chief Minister said that the NPP will have to consult with its State units on this matter. “Other parties in the MDA will need to discuss on supporting the UDP candidate for the bye-election,” Sangma said.
Meanwhile, he said that there is no threat to the stability of the MDA Government. “We have all reiterated commitment to the coalition. We will try to resolve all the issues that are coming whatever the situation may be,” he said.
Earlier on Tuesday, senior leaders of the UDP led by senior working president, Bindo Mathew Lanong met Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma at his residence to urge upon him that the Speaker’s post should remain within the party and also to request that the partners in the MDA should support the candidate of the UDP in the bye-election to the Shella Assembly constituency.
“We have met Chief Minister to impress upon him that the Speaker’s post should remain with the UDP. We also told him that it will not be a bad idea to show the solidarity within the MDA Government by supporting the candidate of the party for the forthcoming bye-election in Tura,” Lanong informed here on Tuesday.
He also said that by having a consensus candidate, it will be a befitting respect to late Dr Roy, the main force for the stability and unity of the MDA Government.
