The seizures were made from three people who were travelling in a night-super bus which was coming from Manipur.

The three accused were identified as Surendra Panai, Soilen Hajong and Rebecca Misao. A case has been registered under 22(c) NDPS act and further investigation is on.

When contacted, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Claudia Lyngwa informed that they had gone to raid the parking lot at Polo after receiving inputs from the Assam Rifles. She said that the amount that was seized from them is of commercial quantity.

Meanwhile, Lyngwa said that these Yaba tablets belong to the amphetamine family of stimulant drugs which are considered to be worse than heroine.  She said that these are chemical drugs and there is no substitution therapy. “It is very difficult to treat these chemical drugs,” Lyngwa said.

According to her, the people who are involved in the smuggling are looking at other ways and means since the heroin has gone dry in Shillong adding that these Yaba tablets are also entering Manipur through Myanmar.

The East Khasi Hills SP, however, said that it is really encouraging to see the efforts of the Manipur police to go all out against manufactured drugs in their State.

“They have a seizure of around 183 kg of brown sugar and heroine from one of the manufacturing factory. This is probably one of the biggest seizures of heroin in the North Eastern region in recent times,” Lyngwa said.

It may be mentioned on August 17 last, in of one of the biggest drug seizures in Manipur, police had busted a heroin manufacturing factory and seized 183 kg of drugs worth over Rs 100 crore in international market from Thoubal district.
