TURA | Jan 11, 2019:
The complaint was lodged by the Achik Youth Council (AYC). It was reported that one of the quarries has been using dynamite to blast stones, some of which have landed on the houses of residents of the same village.
The village falls under Kharkutta C&RD Block.
According to the NGO, the 4 quarries, which have been working without any valid licenses, have put the lives of the villagers in danger as well the destruction of the fragile eco-system.
“It is of serious concern that such activities are being overlooked by authorities. Where did they get the permission to use dynamite in a residential village and who gave them NOCs? The matter needs to be seriously looked into and all those responsible for the illegal acts, should be booked,” said Maxbirth Momin, the general secretary of the NGO.
The 4 quarries allegedly belong to Withiling Sangma, Nanilstone Momin, Prejesh Momin and Temolin Sangma. The quarry belonging to Withiling Sangma has allegedly been using dynamite to blast stones.
When contacted on the matter, the deputy commissioner of NGH, SC Sadhu stated that an inquiry into the matter has been taken up with the BDO of Kharkutta being charged to look into it.
“After the inquiry we will look into the matter on an urgent basis and action will follow,” stated the DC.
Earlier the AYC had also complained about stone quarries that were mushrooming in the region without any sort of legal clearance for operation. There were in the villages of Mendima, Balapara and Majipara, all in the same district.
