SHILLONG | May 15, 2019:
The Secretary of Hima Nongspung in Ri Bhoi district, Michael Warjri, who was earlier arrested by Assam Police following his opposition to PMGSY road initiated by the neighbouring government, was released on bail today.
Warjri’s bail was applied by the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) two days back.
“We had applied for bail two days back and some of our leaders had accompanied the relatives to see him being released from jail,” said FKJGP leader, Kitboklang Nongphlang.
Warjri was accompanied by FKJGP leaders including its vice president, Eldie Newton Lyngdoh, education secretary Reginal Thabah, and general secretary, Luistar Lyngdoh.
The secretary of Hima Nongspung is currently in Shillong.
It may be mentioned that the house of the Secretary of Michael Warjri, was also attacked following his opposition to PMGSY road.
This incident has sparked criticisms from several social organisations and political parties in Meghalaya even as they condemned the ‘intrusion’ of the Assam government into Meghalaya’s territory.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Alexander Laloo Hek on Tuesday led a delegation of Government officials to assess the ground situation in Balkhawa village in Ri-Bhoi district.
Last week, Congress leaders including former chief minister, Dr Mukul Sangma had visited the site to get a first hand information on the situation in Balakhawa village.
