SHILLONG, January 24, 2018: Free media seems to fleeting from this country, a senior journalist from Meghalaya, Biplap Dey was beaten up by suspected timber smugglers at 10:30 pm yesterday in Athiabari, West Khasi Hills district.
As per ground reports, timber trucks were found plying freely and as the media person was waiting for police to arrive the culprits took matters in their hands and fled away from the scene.
Rampant timber smuggling is being carried out freely under the nose of authorities and action against errant officials are a long way in coming.
No organisation has claimed responsibility but close sources say that the work was carried out by miscreants and smugglers operating in the area. A camera and mobile belonging to the journalist have been snatched and a case has been lodged.
According to a comprehensive report titled ‘The climate for free speech in India’ by media watchdog The Hoot, not only were 11 journalists killed in the country, 46 were attacked, 12 were threatened and 27 faced police action including detentions, arrests and cases filed.
