SHILLONG | Dec 10, 2019:
The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People’s (FKJGP) has demanded the ruling allies (regional parties) of the state to withdraw their support from the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government after party MP from Tura, Agatha Sangma extended her support to the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), 2019 in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
“The NPP has betrayed the people of the state by supporting the bill in the Lok Sabha,” said FKJGP Vice President, Eldie Newton Lyngdoh after a meeting of the federation in Shillong here today.
Lyngdoh said prior to the tabling of the bill in the Lok Sabha, various social organisations and the state government had expressed their stiff opposition to the bill, “but to our utter dismay, the NPP changed its stand by supporting CAB and we condemn this act of betrayal.”
Furthermore, the FKJGP has demanded the regional allies — UDP, HSPDP, PDF and KHNAM to withdraw their support from the MDA government led by the NPP.
“The regional parties should unite on this issue,” said Lyngdoh while reiterating the federation’s demand for implementation of Inner Line Permit in the state.
