The Meghalaya Cabinet on Wednesday approved the creation of Directorate of Food Processing under the Department of Agriculture.
“The Cabinet had a detailed discussion on the proposal brought by the Agriculture department on the creation of this new directorate. We decided to approve the creation of the new directorate since the proposal brought to the Cabinet was valid and genuine,” Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong told newsmen after the Cabinet meeting here today.
He said that it was necessary to create this directorate taking into account the richness of the State in the production of fruits like oranges, potatoes, pineapples and agricultural produce like black pepper, tomato among many others.
According to Tynsong, the Directorate will be responsible in keeping track of the processing unit in the State. He said that the State Government is also looking to encourage entrepreneurs and youths to set up various processing units in different sectors throughout the State.
At the same time, the Cabinet also approved the proposal to amend the rules of the Meghalaya Health Service Rules, 1990. According to Tynsong, the amendment is related to the promotion of the doctors serving throughout the State.
