Thieves who stole over 70 mobile tower batteries in Meghalaya busted in Assam

A gang of thieves from Assam, involved in the theft of over 70 mobile tower batteries across the Garo Hills region, were apprehended by police in Boko in Assam while they were allegedly trying to steal batteries from a mobile tower.

Soccer loving Meghalaya is all in for yet another round of adrenaline rush, cheers and renewed spirit of celebrating and promoting the game of soccer and women empowerment through the Hero Indian Women’s League which will be held in the North East for the first time.

Seven national Women’s team are all set to battle it out for the top spot of the Hero Indian Women’s League, in Meghalaya, the inaugural ceremony of which was held on Saturday.

From owners of the national league playing football clubs, to recipient of the Arjuna awards, most of them are of the view that the Hero Indian Women’s League will work as a major boost to promote women football not just in the region but the entire country.

“This is the first time that IWL is happening in the North East and we hope that this will further encourage and boost more talents and attract more stakeholders to support women’s football in the country,” said Larsing Ming Sawyan the owner of Shillong Lajong team.

Sawyan further pointed out that the Indian Women’s team ranks 59 in World Rankings and if the team can improve to 30 odd ranking, the Indian Women’s team will actually be playing the World Cup.

Asked, if Lajong will have a women’s team in the near future, Sawyan said, “Our objective is to branch out to women’s football. So far as a club we first entered into national league and we are looking at building a strong base before venturing into women football and once we are in we are in for good”.

Meanwhile, Former Indian Captain of the Women National team and ESU coach O. Bembem Devi said, “Last year only six team now it is seven and it is working as motivation for all of us”.

Devi further stressed that proper sponsors and attention will help improve their ranking and even play the world cup.

Defending champions Eastern Sporting Union will take on Indira Gandhi Academy for Sports & Education on March 26, the first day of the league. The participating team includes Eastern Sporting Union, Rising Student Club, KRYHPSA, India Rush Soccer Club, Sethu FC, Gokulam Kerala FC and Indira Gandhi Academy for Sports & Education.

The state of Meghalaya, particularly the Garo Hills region today remembered the first CM of the state, Capt Williamson Sangma, through various programs organized in many places across the region on the occasion of his 28 death anniversary. The former CM was remembered through grand functions held in his honour across Garo Hills.

Here are facts you need to know about the first ever Chief Minister of Meghalaya

**Williamson Ampang Sangma, a Garo leader, was the founding Chief Minister of Meghalaya, twenty-first state in Indian Union on 21 January 1972. He was also the first ever Governor of Mizoram among the Garos in 1989

** He along with Salseng C. Marak are the only Meghalaya Chief Minister’s to complete full term of five years in office. He always represented Baghmara assembly constituency, even after merging his political outfit in Congress(I) party

** With prior military service, he entered political field in 1952, and subsequently was elected as the Chief executive member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council(GHADC)

** He being the first Chief executive member of Garo Hills Autonomous District Council(GHADC), called a conference of the people of the autonomous hill districts of then-Assam at Tura on 6–8 October 1954, to consider the demand of a hill state

** In 1957, Sangma was elected to Assam Legislative Assembly. When the Assamese language bill was passed in spite of opposition from tribal people later, he resigned from the cabinet to fight for the cause of separate statehood. W.A. Sangma resigned his cabinet post from the government in protest against the official Assamese language policy adopted by the Assam government

** In Meghalaya legislative assembly elections held in March 1972, after the new state was established, regional parties secured majority, while Congress secured nine seats out of total 60 seats in assembly. W.A. Sangma of APHLC sworn in as its first Chief Minister with majority

** With realisation of Meghalaya as a state, it ultimately united the areas of the Khasi, Jainta, and the Garo Hills under the leadership of Williamson Sangma. He also made sure the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE), which he considered to be of prime importance, was in Garo Hills

After his death in 1999, succeeding Government of Meghalaya honoured him by naming several of public properties, including educational institutes on his name.
