Seven people lost their lives in floods, landslides in State since April

SHILLONG | July 17, 2019:

The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has revealed that at least seven people including the three-year-old child Wantai R Marak have lost their life since April this year due to the floods and landslides.

“There are a total number of seven people who lost their life in view of the flood and monsoon,” SDMA Executive Director stated in a statement issued on Tuesday.

It may be mentioned that the body of 3-year-old child in South Garo Hills district was retrieved after she had been swept away by strong current of water on July 11 at Rewak Dabrum village under Rongara C&RD Block.

According to the SDMA, there are total number of more than two lakh people who have been affected in view of the flood adding that all the 11 districts have been affected due to the incessant rain during the past seven to eight days.

Besides the total number of 2,05,213 people who have been affected, SDMA Executive Director informed that there are total number of 1147 villages which have been affected.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Ministerial delegation led by Meghalaya Home Minister, James PK Sangma and Revenue Disaster Management Minister, Kyrmen Shylla held a review meeting on the flood relief operations in Garo Hills.

The two Ministers were accompanied by Phulbari local MLA, S.G. Mominin, Rajabala MLA, Dr Azad Zaman, Trikrikilla MLA, Dr Jimmy Sangma and West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, Ram Singh.

The Ministerial delegation assured immediate relief.  The Ministerial delegation also carry out inspection and and boat survey of flood affected areas at Phulbari.
