A 40 year old Ayurvedic, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homeopathy (AYUSH) doctor was arrested last evening after he allegedly molested one of the patients who came for a medical check-up at the Sibbari PHC in South Garo Hills.
According to the FIR filed by the victim at a PS in SGH, the doctor, identified as Dr AZ Sheikh, had asked the victim to undress on the excuse of a medical check-up. When she refused to do so, he used physical force on her leading to the woman raising an alarm after which the doctor was caught by the people at the PHC.
“This is not the first time he molested her. Earlier, on many occasions he molested or attempted to molest the 27 year old woman. She mustered the courage to speak out this time and filed a case against him,” said district police chief, Abraham T Sangma.
The Garoland State Movement Committee (GSMC) accompanied the woman in filing her complaint at the PS.
“The doctor has been arrested yesterday and is currently in custody. An investigation into the case in currently ongoing,” added the SP.
“This is a very condemnable act and we can’t understand as to why an AYUSH doctor would even require a girl to be unclothed. This is someone who had criminal intent and we hope he is given the strictest punishment under law. We also want to know as to how these doctors are being allowed to prescribe allopathic medicines and practice as a full fledged doctor,” asked president of AYC, Silning D Sangma after hearing of the incident.
In many of the lesser known health centres in the state, AYUSH doctors, who are only supposed to work on their line of knowledge have been seen working as full fledged doctors, even going to the extent of administering and prescribing allopathic medicines.
After two years of being allegedly subjected to sexual abuse by none other than her stepfather, a 17-yr-old girl from West Garo Hills finally managed to muster the courage to complain against her tormentor.
