Meghalaya: Notorious timber smugglers sneak off with seized vehicle right from forest office

Tura: The practice of timber smuggling has been going on without any fear of the law in Garo Hills region of Meghalaya despite several reports highlighting the practice. In yet another case of timber smuggling, a group of smugglers, whose vehicle was picked up by the state forest department from near a forest range in West Garo Hills, stole the vehicle from under the nose of the same department the next morning.

The incident took place in the early morning of Saturday, Nov 23 from the Hollaidanga Range Beat House under Tikrikilla police station in West Garo Hills. An FIR on the incident was submitted on the same morning.

The vehicle, a Pik Up truck (ML 08E 2018) was carrying illegal timber, allegedly cut from within the Dibru Hill Forest Reserve, when it was intercepted by the state forest department. The occupants of the vehicle ran from the spot taking the keys along with them.

The vehicle, according to official records belongs to one Md Sirajul Islam.

“We hauled the vehicle after getting information of a Pik Up carrying timber. It was brought to the Beat House and kept there by our department,” said a forest official.

The incident of theft from the beat house took place at about 1 AM according to officials who were there and discovered the theft.

“They came in a huge group when all our officials were sleeping and firstly pushed the vehicle to the main gate. Once they reached the gate, they started the vehicle and made a run for it, even damaging the gate. It was only after that we came to know what happened and filed a FIR at the Nidanpur outpost,” added the forest official.

Police officials from the same outpost confirmed the receipt of the FIR while also stating that the vehicle went towards Chibinang – a place notorious for the huge number of illegal timber saw mills.
