Meghalaya Govt to appeal apex court to call off rescue operations at Ksan coal mine

Shillong, April 16, 2019

Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma has said that the State Government will appeal to the Supreme Court to call off the rescue operations inside the rat hole mines at Ksan village in East Jaintia Hills.

“We have decided to appeal to the apex court to call off the rescue operation,” Chief Minister told reporters here today.

Admitting that the situation is extremely difficult, he said that they are continuing with the rescue operations as per the order of the Supreme Court.

“We will see if the apex court allows the State Government to think otherwise or may be to discontinue the operations,” Sangma said.

Chief Minister said that at the present moment, the Government is hopeful that they could still retrieve the bodies of miners.

“This would at least allow the family members to complete their last rites,” Sangma added.

When asked about continuation of illegal transport of coal in state, Chief Minister asserted that the State Government is very clear that they would not allow any kind of illegal activities pertaining to coal mining to take place.

“After the incident which took place in Ksan, we have immediately put up committee in every district to look on the issue of illegal mining and to closely monitor activities which going on,” he said.

Sangma informed that many cases have been registered and a lot of people have been arrested for their involvement in illegal mining since the case.

“We are also looking on the documentation of people involved in illegal mining. The people arrested for indulging in illegal mining were booked under the various provisions of the CrPC. But we are looking at national laws which are more stringent to book people indulging in illegal mining activities. But this is not an easy task,” he added.
