Former Cop & Taekwondo star selected as Icon for PM Modi’s Fit India Campaign

SHILLONG | Aug 28, 2019:

A retired police officer and achiever of the Kiang Nangbah Award 2019, 64-yr-old Eugene K Marak has been selected as an Icon along with 27 others for the Fit India – Healthy India Campaign, a movement which will launched by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in New Delhi tomorrow.

A dedicated and committed sportsman, Eugene is a 5 Dan Black Belt international Taekwondo player. He had represented the country in several international Taekwondo Championships and also officiated as a Referee in many international competitions including 12th South Asian Games 2016.

The 64-yr-old Taekwondo player was born on October 30, 1955 in a small village in Kharkutta, North Garo Hills. He joined the Meghalaya police in 1986 as a Sub-Inspector and was promoted to the rank of Dy. SP in 2011. During his service, he received more than 60 awards for good work and retired from the service on October 31, 2013.

After his retirement, Marak gave his 100 percent to the sports and took part in many competitions. He is still imparting coaching to the budding talents of Meghalaya for the growth of sports in the country.

In 2019, he was awarded the Kiang Nangbah Award (State Award) for Sports.

He is currently the Vice President of the Meghalaya Taekwondo Association.

Speaking to TNT-The Northeast Today over the phone, Marak said “I feel proud to be Meghalayan. I will continue to do what I want to do. I praise the Lord for this achievement and thank you everyone, my friends and family for their support and especially Meghalaya Taekwondo Association, Meghalaya Sports Dept and last but not the least, the Director Sports Authority of India who personally took special care of us. I don’t forget my Master Luthre Lohar who thought me Taekwondo and every basic properly, Thank you.”
