The Citizens’ Forum against Culture of Violence in Meghalaya today demanded an independent inquiry into the “murderous attack” on RTI Activist, Agnes Kharshiing and Amita Sangma and on illegal coal mining in the state.

The Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), HS Shylla has defended his ‘HIV’ remarks where he stated that the Khasi Lineage Bill will protect the Khasi community from HIV- AIDS even as he referred to mixed-marriages with ‘truck drivers and migrant workers’ from outside the state, as one of the reasons leading to the increase of the epidemic in the state.

In his defence, Shylla had stated the spread of the HIV/AIDs is a huge threat to the Khasi community even as he ‘sympathizes’ with the people who have been infected by this virus.

If one knows about the tradition of the indigenous tribes of Meghalaya, they would also know about the significance of their faith and their belief in mythological characters.
