The Meghalaya Government is contemplating of developing a space in Shillong city similar with that of Jantar Mantar in Delhi to make it as an official venue for holding of protest by various organisations.

The State Government is planning to develop this infrastructure at the plot of land in Barik Point which houses the offices of Public Works Department (PWD) .

The members of the State Planning Board led by its chairman Lambor Malngiang along with the officials of the PWD and East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Davis Marak today carried out an inspection of the premises at Barik point to examine the possibilities of constructing a multi storeyed parking lot along with a space for holding of protest at the said plot of land.

“We are looking at the options of constructing an official venue for holding protests at the PWD premises at Barik point. We need to develop such a space since the various organisations are forced to hold protests at the parking lot near Additional Secretary as they do not have any other alternative,” Malngiang after the inspection of the site here today.

According to him, the parking lot near Additional Secretariat is too small for holding of any kind of protests.

“This will be a suitable place to allow the various organisations to hold agitational programmes,” SPB chairman said.

It looks like Malngiang is reviving the idea of former Chief Minister late E.K. Mawlong who envisioned a plan to create a permanent space at the same site. However, he (Mawlong) could not make this a reality following the fall of his government.

It may be mentioned that former Deputy Chief Minister, Bindo Mathew Lanong had also wanted to convert the 5th Ground at Polo as the official venue for holding of protests. However, none of the Governments followed up this proposal.

Meanwhile, Malngiang said that they are also planning to develop a multi storied parking lot to ease the traffic congest the city.

“We have asked the PWD to submit the report within a month time on the status of this land at Barik point,” he said adding that the Government will be looking to develop a similar infrastructure wherever land is available in the city.

Informing that as per official records, the total area of this plot of land is around two acres, he said that they will wait for the report from the PWD to take a call on the shifting of these offices.

“We would like to complete the whole exercise at the earliest,” Malngiang said.

A hundred and eighteen years and counting, the Seng Khasis or the Khasi community following the indigenous faith continues to celebrate the renaissance and awakening of the Khasi community and this year was no exception as the streets of Shillong was covered in festivity as people danced through the streets to the sound of the drums and chanting the traditional cry “Hoii kiew”. The occasion was none other than the festival of the indigenous Khasi faith and culture – Seng Kut Snem. The festival is observed to mark the Seng Khasi Movement. During the British rule, continued assault on the indigenous faith and culture of the Khasis and Jaintias led sixteen young men to form an organization called the ‘Khasi Young Men’s Association’ on November 23, 1899 to preserve and safeguard the indigenous way of life also known as ‘Niam Trai Niam Tre’. A year later, the Khasi Young Men’s Association celebrated its first anniversary and called it Seng Kut Snem and the occasion is celebrated every year to commemorate that movement. In 1901, the Association was renamed ‘Seng Khasi’. This year the festivities marked the 118th anniversary of the Seng Khasi Movement.
