Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday said that Meghalaya and Japan are home to a unique benediction of nature — Cherry Blossom and maintained that the state government is looking forward to long-term and short-term collaboration with the Government of Japan building on the commonality of this remarkable tree.

“This tree binds the two countries and makes the State of Meghalaya and Japan the home of a unique benediction of nature,” Conrad tweeted.

The India International Cherry Blossom Festival 2018 was inaugurated by the Chief Minister at 5th Ground, Polo in Shillong on Wednesday. The Opening Ceremony was also attended by the Japanese Ambassador to India, H.E. Mr Kenji Hiramatsu.

The 4-day long festival will witness several cultural events besides fashion shows, rock concerts, a beauty pageant and amateur Golf Tournament.

Alongside, there will be stalls showcasing the region’s food, wine and crafts and there are several Japanese cultural events, a Japanese Food Pavilion and a Higher Education Stall in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in India.

In a series of tweets, the Chief Minister stated that India International Cherry Blossom Festival has provided a platform to celebrate the autumn season and during this celebration the festival will provide a mosaic of culture, sports and culinary delights of the State of Meghalaya, North East India and also Japan.

Highlighting the tourism aspect, Sangma said that this will give a boost to local tourism and hoped to see more visitors. “The people will derive tremendous benefit directly and indirectly from the Festival,” he tweeted.
