SHILLONG | Feb 22, 2019:

As political parties prepare to battle it out for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, the Meghalaya Congress, which is yet to decide on its candidates for both Shillong and Tura seats, is optimistic that former Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma will be selected by the party high command as a party runner from Tura LS seat.

Senior Congress leader, Ampareen Lyngdoh on Friday said that Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader, Dr Mukul Sangma is the party number one batsman to contest from Tura Parliamentary seat.

“It would be a dream come true for all Congressmen in the State if our CLP leader really agrees to contest for the Tura seat. The Tura Parliamentary seat used to be a bastion of the Congress. Now what we need to do is to make sure that we regain that seat,” Ampareen, who is also the party legislator, said while taking to reporters here today.

The senior Congress leader said the reason that everyone in the party is looking for Dr Mukul Sangma is because of a simple reason that he is the most winnable candidate.

“We have lot of batsmen within the party. But the number one batsman would be the CLP leader,” she said.

When asked whether or not it would leave a vacuum in the State if Dr Mukul contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Ampareen said that the Congress party has a host of leaders and so many of the party MLAs have gain tremendous experience and “even if we should win the seat back from Tura.”

“I think it would be a worthwhile sacrifice. Most Congressmen are looking at the number one. Whether or not the number one will contest and sacrifice on behalf of the party is yet to be seen. His decision is final and we will respect it,” he said.

When asked whether there is difference of opinion since Dr Mukul is not keen contest, she said that the question here is of choice as there is no dearth of leadership in the party.

“Whether or no he contests he is still a CLP leader. In the crucial elections of 2019 every seat counts. Therefore, we need to send the number one batsman to the field if we want to score more runs,” the senior Congress leader said.

When asked if the party is aware of the report that sitting Shillong MP Vincent H Pala is joining the NPP, she said that she was witness to an AICC meeting where the MP was present and where he has held allegiance to the party.

“Any other gossip that is passing around in the society is just mere gossip. I was there and I was witness where he has promised that for him the only party is Congress. So where is the question of him switching allegiance to any other party. Right now the going is good for the Congress and only a fool would say that I don’t want a Congress seat,’ Ampareen said.
