Blame it on the Congress! Analyzing the poor performance of the party in the recently concluded Assembly election in the state, the United Democratic Party (UDP) today blamed the Congress’s abuse of power and the party meager resources for poll debacle.

“In many of the constituencies, the Congress has use money power to lure the electorates. It is fact that bought voters through inducements,” UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh told newsmen after the party CEC meeting here today.

He further alleged that former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has misused several schemes of the Government for the elections adding that the schemes has turned into election sops.

The UDP working president also explained that when he termed the party had “meager resources”, he meant that certain candidates did not have enough funds even to set up an office while the Congress used money to influence the outcome of the polls.

Lyngdoh, a three time-MLA who was defeated by Mohendro Rapsang of the Congress from West Shillong, said that authorities could not check the use of money.

“Police were more concern at checking the erecting of party flags but could not control the flow of cash,” he added.

Trying to put behind the debacle of the party in the Assembly polls, Lyngdoh said that the UDP from now on will aggressively push its agenda.

“We will no longer concentrate on constituency-centric issues but issues concerning the state will be of utmost importance to us,” the UDP working president said.
