In view of the outbreak of the mysterious Novel Coronavirus (nCoV), the medical students who are pursuing their studies in China have returned to Meghalaya.

“A total number of 37 students, studying medical in China, and who have returned home do not have any symptoms of the virus. All of them are staying in their respective homes. We are following up on their health condition on a daily basis. The health conditions of all the 37 are fine,” Health and Family Welfare spokesperson, Dr. M Marbaniang informed here today.

She also informed that the doctors are advising them on the do’s and don’ts after they arrived from China. According to her, majority of these students are pursuing medical in China’s Wangdong province, Sichuan province and Yunnan province.

Meanwhile, Health and Family Welfare Minister Alexander Laloo Hek reiterated that the state is ready to tackle any eventuality adding that District Medical Health Officers and CHCs/ PHCs have been directed to remain alert.

It is learnt that health department has activated the Integrated Disease Surveillance Team and Rapid Response Team to tackle the disease in case of any outbreak. Earlier, the Meghalaya Government had asked the Airports Authority in Guwahati and Umroi to be on high alert, screening the passengers coming from the infected areas.

It may be mentioned that the new coronavirus—named 2019-nCoV—is thought to have originated in the food market of the central China metropolis and has since infected thousands of people across the globe. Deaths and cases are likely to rise until the outbreak is contained.
