TURA | Nov 26:

The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) is set to witness a similar political drama as in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) with all eyes fixed on the crucial trust vote to be held on Wednesday.

The No-Confidence motion was moved by the Opposition Congress on November 25, the vote of which will be held tomorrow as the order of business.

Interestingly prior to the trust vote, an election to the post of Deputy Chairman of the GHADC will be held after the current deputy chairman, Mettrinson Momin, resigned following an attempt by the National Peoples’ Party (NPP) to “impeach” him.

Mettirnson had continued as deputy chairman despite joining the opposition Congress when the 1st NPP EC in the GHADC for this term was voted out by a coalition led by the Congress party. Mettrinson had joined the Congress then and he stepped down when the NPP moved to impeach him for siding with the Congress on Monday.

The election will now be held tomorrow between the NPP representative, Augustine Marak and the Congress candidate, Mettrinson.

On Monday, 10 MDCs in the opposition camp had signed the no-confidence motion against the Dipul Marak led EC. It will be taken up on Wednesday.

Among the ten signatories of the no-confidence were Mettrinson Momin along with two recently removed Executive Members, Rightious Sangma and Jogonsing Sangma. As Momin had signed the no-confidence move, the ruling alliance moved for his impeachment which forced him to quit.

According to Chairman of GHADC, Denang T Sangma, the no-confidence motion will be the last order of business on Wednesday. He said that the council will first seek passage of the supplementary budget which will be followed by the election to the post of deputy chairman.

It may be mentioned that the GHADC trust vote comes days after the fall of the United Democratic Party (UDP) led EC in the KHADC following the decision of Chairman and former NPP leader, PN Syiem to side with the Opposition Congress during the trust vote.
