SHILLONG | Aug 13, 2019:
Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said that the decision on the Speaker’s post will be taken after deliberations with all the partners in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA).
“The decision on Speaker’s post is not the prerogative of the UDP. We will take the views of all the partners before taking any consensus decision on the matter,” Tynsong told reporters here today.
When asked if there was an agreement that the UDP will get the Speaker’s post, he said that when they had formed the MDA Government last year, late UDP president, Dr Donkupar Roy had offered himself, expressing willingness to go take up the mantle.
“Being the senior most leader, we were all happy when late Dr Donkupar made the offer. But there was no agreement as such on the post of the Speaker,” he said.
When asked if the UDP is trying to mislead by claiming the post of Speaker, Tynsong said that the question of misleading does not arise.
“I didn’t say the UDP is trying to mislead. They have every right to claim. But the final decision will be taken by all the partners within the MDA,” he said.
When asked about the plea of the UDP to support the candidate of the party for the Shella bye-election, he said that they are yet to discuss on the issue to have a consensus candidate.
“But I just want to clarify that every political party has got its own ideologies including the UDP and NPP. Therefore, every political party would want to contest the election. But till now, we are yet to discuss when it comes to the issue of having consensus candidate of the MDA,” he said.
Meanwhile, senior leaders of the UDP led by senior working president, Bindo Mathew Lanong met Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma at his residence today evening to urge upon him that the Speaker’s post should remain within the party and also to request the partners in the MDA to support the candidate of the UDP in the bye-election to the Shella Assembly constituency.
“We have met Chief Minister to impress upon him that the Speaker’s post should remain with the UDP. We also told him that it will not be a bad idea to show the solidarity within the MDA Government by supporting the candidate of the party for the forthcoming bye-election in Tura,” Lanong informed here today. He also said that by having a consensus candidate, it will be a befitting respect to late Dr Roy, the main force for stability and unity of the MDA Government.
According to him, he (Chief Minister) also felt that it would be a great thing if all the partners agree to support the candidate of the UDP in the bye-election.
Besides Lanong, the other leaders of the UDP who met Chief Minister include Paul Lyngdoh, Titos Chyne, BG Momin and associate members of the party SK Sunn and Samuel Sangma among others.
