KHLIEHRIAT | Sept 19, 2019:

In a tragic incident, the Dolloi (traditional chief) of Rymbai Elaka, Elios Swer (40s) and two others drowned at Prang River in East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya on Thursday afternoon.

The two others who drowned included the Doloi’s brother-in-law (50s) and his nephew (20s). Their identity is, however, yet to be confirmed.

Police informed that the bodies are yet to be found. “The Search and Rescue team has been informed and they will reach the spot tomorrow morning,” said EJH SP, Vivekanand Singh adding that the district administration have already been informed.


A total of six people went out to the jungle including the Doloi for some work, though local sources claimed that they had gone fishing, when the mishap took place.

Police informed that while three of them stayed back on one side of the river, three others — Swer, his brother-in-law and his nephew took a boat and went to the other side of the river, which is located between East Jaintia Hills, West Jaintia Hills and bordering Bangladesh.

“We are yet to find out the reason why the trio had gone to the other side of the river,” said Singh adding that they are still investigating into the matter.


Meanwhile, Chairman of the Grand Council of Chiefs, John F Kharshiing has expressed shock and dismay over the incident and conveyed his condolences to the Rymbai Dolloi’s family.
