A young filmmaker from Meghalaya, Dominic Sangma has added yet another feather to his artistic and creative cap after his film MA•AMA became the first film from Meghalaya and the only Indian film to be officially selected in the International competition section of Jio MAMI 2018.
This Garo film is Sangma’s debut Feature Film and is produced by Dominic and Xu Jiangshang from China. The film is an Indo-China production. It revolves around the life of an aged man named Philip (85) who lives everyday for 30 years in hope that one day he will be reunited with his wife in afterlife. This film depicts a man and his quest to do whatever it takes to retain the fading memories of his wife’s face from his mind. His quest demands him to face the things that he had avoided for thirty years and at this stage it’s no more a choice but the only gate to open and walk through it.
“This is very personal film, based on the true experiences of my father. It took me more than five years to prepare myself to write this script, which involves intimate conversation with my father about his past, which led me to delve into his painful memories,” said Dominic.
“His wife and my mother passed away 25 years back, I was only two and half year old and I have no personal memories about her, all my memories are inherited from my siblings.
The film germinates from the very fact of my quest to know who my mother was and what really happened to her, which none of my siblings are ready to open up for me. Though my father remarries, he misses my mother very much and the void that she left behind couldn’t be fill. The film is the quest of both father and son to fill that gap,” he added.
Dominic also made sure that everybody plays their own role in the film. “My father himself plays the main character in the film. All our family member acted in the film as themselves. The villager came together to help me during the shoot,” said Dominic.

A little about Dominic Sangma
Dominic Megam Sangma from Meghalaya, has become one of the few filmmakers from the northeast whose films have been selected for international film festivals. He is a graduate from Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute, India. He worked in National Film and Development Corporation Ltd, for two years before he opened his own Production Company called ANNA FILMS. He also teaches Direction and Script Writing at Film and Television Institute, Itanagar, India.
The renowned filmmaker, who was born and brought up in small village in Ribhoi district, had directed numbers of short films and documentaries and his films had competed in many international film festival. His Diploma film titled Rong•kuchak (Echoes) won National Student Film Award for best short film in 2014, and it also won Special mentioned in Ca’ Foscari Short Film Festival, Venice 2015.

Congratulations have poured in from different parts of the country as artistic people and filmmakers alike expressed excitement and were all in praise for Dominic’s feat.
“Really proud of Dominic because his vision of life has moved me deeply, much more deeply than I have ever been moved by any film. I should like to add my praise and gratitude as a fellow director for the unearthly and brilliant contribution to cinema,” said fellow filmmaker from Meghalaya and national award filmmaker, Pradip Kurbah.

About Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival
The 20th edition of the Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival with Star will be held between October 25 to November 1. The festival will screen 14 new titles, across eight languages, including 12 World premieres and five debut features.
The festival is organized by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), which was founded by a group of film industry stalwarts in 1997 and was conceived and created with an aim to engage film lovers from all walks of life, and to foster an ideal climate of good cinema across the country by presenting the best of global and Indian cinema.
