Noted entrepreneur and philanthropist from Meghalaya, Honsen Lyngdoh breathed his last on Tuesday morning in Super Care Hospital at the age of 82 years after a prolonged illness.

Brief History

Honsen Lyngdoh, born in a poor  family and deprived of formal education, started his carrier as a workshop owner but with self-acquired experience and expertise and with modern vision was solely responsible for  setting up of the road construction  firm ‘Honsen Lyngdoh Earth Moving & Hauling Services’, and made the firm where it is today. With enormous understanding of machineries along with hard dedication, he became one of the most respected businessmen of the state.

Here are facts you should about Honsen Lyngdoh:

## Honsen Lyngdoh, son of (L) J.R. Roswell Kharbudon was born on March 16, 1936 in Shillong. He was a 1st Class Contractor with Public Works Department (Roads), Government of Meghalaya, Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd. CPWD, IOC, MES.

## Despite the fact that he received no formal schooling (cannot read or write), Honsen was a versatile person and could speak four different languages — Khasi, English, Hindi, Nepali.

## After having attained name and fame, Honsen did not stop there. He used his resources to uplift the society and spent most of his energy in community and social services. With sole intention of diverting youths towards healthy activities, He developed numerous playgrounds including Football ground, Volley-ball ground, Basketball ground etc. in the state of Meghalaya, Assam and in Arunachal Pradesh.

## A man who received no formal schooling was aware of the value of education and thereafter contributed to Educational Institutions by way of developing sites for school & collage buildings, and also by way of donation towards infrastructure development. Some portion of the profit from business was set aside for village roads development, playgrounds and educational institutions.

## He was a man with a big heart. Apart from educational and social contributions, Honsen also played a big role in connecting one village to another through means of roads. He has constructed many roads in remotest rural areas, to connect the villages with PWD roads and National Highways, some of the major motor able roads constructed are mentioned below:-

  • 5 Kilo,(Shallang) to Langmar Village (West Khasi Hills) – 36Kms.
  • Shallang to Rongkhukre Village (Garo Hills) – 22 Kms.
  • From Shallang to Dadengiri Village (Garo Hills) – 18 Kms.

All three above roads are situated at the remotest area of the state and are today the lifeline of the villages and named by local people as ‘HONSEN ROADS’.

  • Lower and Upper Mawiong roads, Shillong (East Khasi Hills) – 3 Kms (presentlytaken over by the Public Works Department, Meghalaya).

 ## Achievements

  • Recipient of “The National Citizens Award 1991”on the 14th Sept, 1992,by President of India (Late) Shankar Dayal Sharma, for the contribution to the Development of the North Eastern States of India.

  • Recipient of ‘Life Time Achievement Award’ on 30th January, 2015, by 5th North-East Consumer Awards for Social Entrepreneurship, award was handed over by Union Cabinet Minister for MSME, Kalraj Mishra.
  • Recipient of ‘Silver Elephant Award’ on the 16th February, 2015, by President of India Pranab Mukherjee, for his contribution to Scouts & Guides movement.
  • President of The Antique Wheels of the North East. Owner of the vintage car model ‘Ford T1904’ which was utilized by Sir Richard Attenborough in the movie “GANDHI”.

  • Participated and won the many vintage car rallies (from 1975 till date). Awarded 1st prize from DUNLOP, GOOD YEAR, MRF and State Bank of India for the same.
  • Lifetime Member and Member of the Managing Body Committee of the Indian Red Cross Society, Meghalaya State Branch.
  • Executive Member of the YMCA.
  • Board Member of the KJP Synod Sepngi (Robert Hospital).
  • Lifetime Member of the Kaziranga Wildlife Society. Assam
  • Vice-Patron of the Meghalaya Bharat Scouts &Guides.
  • Executive member of Earls Holiday Home.
