Health and Family Welfare Minister Alexander Laloo Hek today led a delegation of Government officials to assess the ground situation in Balkhawa village in Ri-Bhoi district following the recent attack and arrest of Michael Warjri, who is the Secretary of Hima Nongspung, by Assam police.
Hek was accompanied by Urban Affairs Minister, Hamletson Dohling, Meghalaya Industrial Development Corporation, Renikton Tongkhar, Jirang local MLA Sostheness Sohtun and Nongstoin MLA Macmillan Byrsat.
The delegation of the Government visited the house of the Secretary of Michael Warjri, which was attacked following his opposition to PMGSY road initiated by the Assam Government.
Talking to reporters, Hek informed that they have sought a detailed report on the whole incident from the Ri-Bhoi district administration. Health and Family Minister also condemned the Assam Government for intruding into the areas falling under Meghalaya. “The Government would soon sanctioned developmental programmes for the areas for the benefit of the local people residing in the inter-State border,” Hek stated.
Meanwhile, Jirang local MLA Sostheness Sohtun said that the Government should consider setting up of a police outpost at Balkhawa.Urban Affairs Minister, Hamlet Dohling said that he had spoken to Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal on this incident. He also informed that a meeting of senior officials of both Meghalaya and Assam Government will be held to deliberate on the issue to ensure about the safety and security of the people residing on both sides of the border.
Dohling also informed that the meeting will discuss on the matter for resolving the long pending boundary dispute between the two neighbouring States.
It may be mentioned that Warjri was arrested by Assam Police and till now he is yet to be release. This is not the first time that this kind of incident has occurred along the Assam-Meghalaya inter-state border.
