Amid the hostile atmosphere in Motphran area following a clash between two groups, the state government has assured the people of Shillong that restoring peace in the city is its utmost priority and issued a strict warning against all those involved in spreading rumours on social media.
It may mentioned that in the past two days, there have been many national and regional media organisations that have been publishing false news reports on the Motphran clash like burning down of a Gurudwara, usage of the word ‘Dalits’ in the report, etc.
“Strong action to be taken against those individuals who spread fake news on social media,” said Home Minister James Sangma here on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the HM has called for peace while maintaining that few of the demands made by the pressure groups have already been met while the remedial measures for the other demands is under process.
“We have taken action on the demand made by the NGOs to arrest the people involved in the assault of the three minor boys. The main accused has been arrested and investigation is underway,” Home Minister James K Sangma told TNT-The Northeast Today.
On the other demands made by the three students’ bodies like KSU, FKJGP and HNYF for relocation of residents from Them Iew Mawlong, James said “There are no immediate remedial solutions as yet but we are have taken on board all the stakeholders to discuss on the issue.”
Meanwhile, the Home Minister also maintained that curfew will continue to remain in force in areas falling under Lumdiengjri police station until further order. “We have acted on their demands but violence still persists and the government is trying to contain the situation. You see, we will not allow anybody to take the law into their own hands. Period.” he added.
“I appeal to all the citizens of Shillong to uphold the peace and avoid from circulating false information on social media platforms,” urged James.
It may be mentioned that the state government on Friday had suspended phone internet services (2G, 3G and 4G) to stop rumours.
