The residents of West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya has lodged a complaint regarding the operation of illegal gambling dens in the border town even while accusing the police of turning a blind eye to the menace.
In their complaint letter, which was submitted to the deputy commissioner, Ram Singh, the Hallidayganj residents of the plain belt of the district said that there are many people who are running these illegal gambling dens.
In a memorandum submitted recently, residents have named Alom Hussain, Ashraful Islam, Mostafizur Rehman, Khukon Khan, Ashadul Islam, Walliul Islam, Ali, Sakawat Hussain, Nur Islam and Walli Islam as persons who have been running illegal gambling dens of teen patti, rummy among others and posing a serious threat to the people of the area.
“These people are involved in illegal gambling which takes place in the main bazaar itself. They are also involved in illegally collecting taxes from Assam residents who come to market their goods. Also they have been luring daily wage earners to gambling. These people lose their entire earning and go back empty handed every day, leaving themselves as well as their families hungry,” alleged the complainants.
The complainants further urged the administration to take stringent action against the group for their criminal activities.
