A driver of a JCB, who was working in an ongoing road construction project in West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya was abducted on Dec 4 by a group of armed miscreants from the camp where he was staying along with other labourers.
The incident took place in Durakalagre village under the Rongram outpost at about 10:30 pm at night. It was reported that the driver was whisked him away at gun point.
According to information received from police, three unidentified miscreants with arms came into the camp of labourers working on a PMGSY road and took the driver at gunpoint. The kidnapped victim has been identified as Mohan Raj Ghalley. The criminals also took away some mobile phones from the labourers in the camp.
While the identity of the gang of kidnappers is yet to be ascertained, sources believe it to be the handiwork of local criminals.
“A case of kidnapping has been registered and teams have been deployed to help rescue the victim,” said the superintendent of police, West Garo Hills, Dr MGR Kumar.
Further in an attempt to spread awareness on safety, police today, Dec 6, conducted an awareness program for better cooperation and enhancement of safety and security. The program today was conducted to all such stakeholders, contractors of projects being undertaken in remote or vulnerable areas of Garo Hills.
