Shillong | Oct 31, 2018:

The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Wednesday finalised the name of former Nongthymmai MLA, Jemino Mawthoh as its MP candidate from Shillong Parliamentary seat for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The UDP, which is also a major partner of the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance, will project Mawthoh’s name to the MDA coalition, with a hope that he will be named as the ‘common candidate’ of the ruling coalition.

It may be mentioned that former MLA and Working President of the party, Paul Lyngdoh and Jemino Mawthoh were the two probable candidates for the race. Mawthoh was chosen over Lyngdoh during a party meeting here today.

Informing this, UDP Vice president, Allantry F Dkhar said that after thorough deliberation and discussion, the state election committee zeroed it down on former UDP legislator from Nonthymmai constituency, Jemino Mawthoh.

He said that his name will be projected to the MDA coalition to discuss and decide whether or not he will be chosen as the ‘common candidate’ from the MDA for the Shillong parliamentary seat.

Meanwhile, Mawthoh said that this is, at present, an internal decision and they will have to speak with the MDA partners as there may be other parties from the alliance who might project their candidate as well.

Meanwhile, BJP leader AL Hek said that he personally feels that the BJP should field their candidates in both the Shillong and Tura seat since during parliamentary elections, people usually go for either the congress or the BJP.

He however said that the decision lies with the central leadership and they have had a round of preliminary talks on the issue and is expecting another discussion by the end of November.

It may be mentioned that the MDA coalition consists of the NPP, UDP, HSPDP, PDF, NCP and few independents.

Meanwhile, the UDP also declared quite a number of candidates for the KHADC and JHADC elections scheduled to be held next year.
