North East United FC owner and Bollywood actor, John Abraham on Monday has expressed keenness to set up a World Class Football Academy in the capital city of Shillong.

Making his plans known, Abraham said that he has already spoken to the Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma in this regard and informed that the government is in the process of identifying land to allow him to start his Academy.

“Shillong one of the strongest centres of football in the country. We are looking out for land to start the Academy in Shillong and the Chief Minister has extended his help. The CM has assured that he will do everything to help me before the National Games,” the NEUFC owner told media persons on the sidelines of the RFYS’s School Girls City Final (Meghalaya leg) at JN Stadium in Shillong today.

It may be mentioned that John Abraham is also setting up an Academy in Guwahati and is looking forward to establish the same in all the capital cities of the Northeast.

When asked about the tentative date to establish the Academy in Shillong, Abraham said depending on the availability of the land, the plan will take shape swiftly.

“Our basic idea is to train children, both boys and girls, to educate them and help them grow in this respective discipline. It is a very serious business and we intend to move ahead with this plan,” asserted John.

The Bollywood actor also emphasized on the need to reach out to the grass root levels in order to develop this sector while informing that “it would great to have a world class sports academy in the Northeast.

Terming the Northeast as a centre for football, Abraham said “Northeast is my favourite region. I see many star players in the future.”

When asked about the North East united FC’s prospect in the next season of Indian Super League (ISL), John said “Last year was disappointing,; I was very sad; We are hoping for a better season and honestly, I have little expectation; I just want to go out there and play.”
