The Khasi Students Union (KSU) has asked the people of the state and its members in various parts of Meghalaya to remain watchful of the effects of the publication of draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam.
The KSU believes that there is a possibility that persons who are rejected as Indian citizens in Assam would try to sneak into Meghalaya.
The final draft NRC is set to be published on July 30. It is being updated in accordance with the Assam Accord signed on August 15, 1985, and under the directions of the Supreme Court.
In a statement issued on Monday, KSU general secretary Donald V Thabah underlined the need to have an effective mechanism including asking security personnel to remain vigilant in different checkpoints to check the entry of illegal immigrants to Meghalaya.
