By Our Reporter, Shillong News | Shillong, March 04, 2018:
The answer to – Who will form the next government in Meghalaya? is now clear with the NPP staking claim to form the government with the support of UDP, BJP, PDF, HSPDP and one independent MLA.
As it unfolds:
— Its all clear, the NPP led coalition will form the government in Meghalaya with the support of BJP, UDP, PDF, HSPDP and one independent MLA from Dalu– Samuel M Sangma. All together, they have crossed the magic number and has in its fold 34 MLAs. And Conrad Sangma is all set to become the new Chief Minister of the state. The swearing in ceremony will be held on Tuesday at 10.30 am.
“More MLAs likely to join the government. Except Congress all will be there in the govt,” said BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The Congress, on the other hand, has no other option but to sit in the opposition because even if it gets the support of the remaining MLAs — 1 KHNAM and 2 independent MLAs, they still can’t cross the magic number.
“We have submitted the letter of support of 34 MLAs which include 19 from the NPP, six from the UDP, four from the PDF, 2 each from HSPDP and BJP and an independent MLA,” Chief Minister designate Conrad K Sangma told newsmen after meeting the Governor.
When asked whether the UDP has set the condition that he should be the Chief Minister, Conrad said that it is true that the letter of support which the NPP had received from the three regional parties states that they would support the Government led by Conrad Sangma.
“We have agreed to the condition set by the three regional parties. Therefore, I am going to be the Chief Minister,” he said.
Replying to a question whether they finalized the name of the new alliance, he said that they are going to decide the name of this alliance. “By tomorrow the picture will be clear. we are yet to decide on cabinet sharing and who will occupy the post of the Deputy Chief Minister,” Conrad said.
When asked what would be his top most priority after assuming office as the new CM, he said that the party right from day one is very clear that it will work to provide of good governance to the people.
— Meanwhile, at Dr Mukul Sangma’s residence, a Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting was held whereby the newly elected Congress MLAs have resolved to elect Dr Mukul Sangma as their leader. In line with this resolution, the AICC president Rahul Gandhi has named Dr Sangma as the CLP leader. A letter of acknowledgement has been sent to the Governor Ganga Prasad.
— Why NPP? UDP President Donkupar Roy said that the first reason is that the party is for a non-congress government and the other main reason is to provide stability. When asked if they have set any condition to the NPP, Dr Roy said that the only condition is that Conrad should be the Chief Minister.
— The UDP has rejected the Congress offer to form an alliance as the majority supports a that non-Congress Govt in the state. UDP president, Dr Donkupar Roy informed that Dr Mukul Sangma has offered the UDP to lead the Govt for two and half years and Congress for the remaining years, to share the whip of leadership.
— UDP leader, Paul Lyngdoh revealed that NPP Chief Conrad Sangma will be the Chief Ministerial candidate. While other sources have revealed that former Congress leader Prestone Tynsong is the CM candidate of the NPP.
— The NPP led coalition will meet the Governor with the support of 29 MLAs today to stake claim to form the Government. BJP’s ‘magic man’ Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that the NPP, BJP, UDP and HSPDP will stake claim to form the government in Meghalaya at 5 pm this afternoon.
— “UDP will back the formation of non- Congress forces,” UDP leader Bindo M Lanong said on Sunday adding that they will also bring the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) on board.
If this is the final decision of the UDP and if what they claimed of other regional forces forming an alliance is true, then the Congress is at the losing end.
Furthermore, Lanong, who unsuccessfully contested the election, said that the NPP will decide the chief ministerial candidate since it has the maximum MLAs.
Commenting on the participation of its ally — Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), Lanong said that the HSPDP is part of this move since is part of the pre-poll alliance .
— Meanwhile, UDP leader Paul Lyngdoh, who suffered defeat to Congress’s Mohindro Rapsang from West Shillong, said that a Regional Democratic Alliance has been already been formed adding that as of now HSPDP and UDP are part of alliance.
Confirming the PDF’s stand, Lyngdoh said that the PDF has given its word to join the alliance.
— Earlier during the day, BJP leaders visited the UDP leaders at the residence of former CM- Dr Donkupar Roy in Laban.
— Soon after their departure, Congress leaders — Dr Mukul Sangma, Zenith Sangma and Winnerson Sangma arrived at the UDP leader’s house to seek the latter’s support.
— It may be mentioned that Tura MP Conrad Sangma and BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma had also paid a visit to Dr Donkupar Roy’s House.
