A man has been awarded life imprisonment for killing his brother for family property in Nongpoh, Ri Bhoi.

The court of Sessions Judge G Rani convicted Pington Lamare with imprisonment for life and a fine of Rs 20,000 after being charged under IPC sections 302 (murder) and 201 (disappearance of evidence).

The incident took place on November 9, 2001, at Umkaduh village. It came to light when the wife of the victim filed an FIR on November 15.

According to the investigation, the accused confessed to killing his brother and burying him in the jungle of Umkaduh. Before the incident, Lamare and his brother had a quarrel in a paddy field in the village over ownership of the field. This was when Lamare killed his brother by hitting him on the head.

The accused then led the police to the area where the body was buried.
