SHILLONG | March 11, 2019:

With the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls by the Election Commission of India on Sunday, the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) will hold a crucial meeting today evening to decide on the much-awaited ‘common candidate’ issue.

The different partners of the MDA like the UDP and HSPDP had already projected their common candidates — Dr Jemino Mawthoh (UDP) and Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar (HSPDP).

The Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today informed that the presidents of all the coalition partners will meet today evening to decide on the common candidate for the Shillong and Tura Parliamentary seats.

He also informed that they also have an option to either contest as individual parties like the MLA and MDC elections or project a common candidate while adding that this will not affect the coalition.

It may be mentioned that last week, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the NPP hasn’t given up the idea of a common candidate for the lok sabha polls.

Whether the MDA will put up a candidate agreed by all allied partners or each party decides to go solo, this will only be known by tonight.
