Shillong: A fresh altercation was witnessed on Sunday morning between two groups of devotees over performing of the rituals at the 500-yr-old Durga temple in Nartiang located in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.
When contacted, West Jaintia Hills SP Lakador Syiem said that the altercation among the two groups had taken place after the old priest was prevented from entering the temple by the groups of the new priest.
According to Syiem, this is not the first time that the two groups had a clash claiming the rights to perform the rituals at the temple.
“We will take all possible measures to ensure that the law and order problem in the area does not deteriorate. We will also try to see that both the pundits are given opportunities to perform the rituals at the temple,” the West Jaintia Hills SP said.
It may be recalled that the West Jaintia Hills district administration last month had to temporarily close down the 500-year-old Durga temple at Nartiang in view of the clash.
After this, the High Court of Meghalaya on September 7 ordered reopening of Nartiang Durga temple.
The court at the same time had also directed the Deputy Commissioner to provide security in the temple and to the priest performing the puja with immediate effect.
