After the National People’s Party (NPP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the United Democratic Party (UDP) on Thursday entered the show-of-strength competition to proudly and publicly flaunt its strength ahead of the February Assembly Polls.
All roads lead to Malki Ground! The main roads leading to the venue — Malki Ground in Shillong were clogged and traffic congestion became the order of the day on Thursday morning as vehicles bearing UDP flags were seen plying from all directions, in a bid to make their way to the venue with the party expecting a turn-out of over 20000 strong crowd.
The massive rally which was scheduled to start at 10 am today was, however, delayed as leaders await the arrival of party members and supporters from other districts of the state.
The rally will also witness the participation of allies in the upcoming polls –Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and Garo National Council (GNC).
It may be mentioned that the UDP has forged a pre-poll alliance with the HSPDP in the Khasi Hills region while it is tied in a similar alliance with the GNC in Garo Hills.
It was also informed that the UDP will introduce its poll candidates to the public in the rally besides announcing a number of flagship programmes. The party will also announce the names of some of its candidates for different constituencies.
It may be mentioned that the UDP will be contesting in 34 constituencies in the upcoming polls.
The UDP-HSPDP-GNC alliance was forged with an intention to take over the reign from the beleaguered Congress and form a united regional party-led government sans the support of national parties.
