In an effort to promote local fruits in the state, the Meghalaya Government is working on a mission to empower the local farmers, self help groups besides providing a market to the local fruits, which grows in abundance in the state.
The government is contemplating to rope in self help groups to work in tandem with the tourism department and other line departments in promoting local fruits. “Juices, chips and snacks made from local fruits can be offered in hotels instead of other imported eatables,” said a source adding that this will not only help in promoting the local fruits but also benefits the local farmers.
It may be reminded that recently, the government launched the draft policy on Jackfruit Mission at Jackfruit Festival 2018 with an objective to change the entire dynamics, to market and promote jackfruits of Meghalaya.
The policy on Jackfruit Mission is one of the flagship programmes of the government that would encourage entrepreneurial activities and would help the farmers of the State to generate additional income from the fruit, which is found in every household in rural areas.
The source said that the government is contemplating to market local fruits like jack fruits in a big way and to attract tourists with local fruits offerings.
Meanwhile, official sources in the tourism department informed that the initiative to rope in local farmers in the ambit of promoting tourism through local fruits is a good effort which requires the concerted effort of all stakeholders.
“We can act as facilitators, get everyone on board and see that the project moves in the right direction” the source said adding that this is a multi-pronged approach which needs to be examined and worked out accordingly with the other line departments.
