SHILLONG | July 16, 2019:

The Meghalaya Police has registered a suo moto case against a Guwahati based online news portal for “repeatedly” publishing news items vis-a-vis the oil spilling allegation along the Shillong-Guwahati Highway.

“We have filed a suo moto FIR against the digital brand and a case has been registered. We are going to call the staffs of the particular news media to ask them as to how can they publish such stories without any confirmation,” informed a senior police officer on Tuesday.

The allegations on oil/mobil spilling along the Shillong-Guwahati Highway in Ri Bhoi district of Meghalaya have been doing its round on multiple occasions with Assam-based commuters claiming that oil was purposely spilled on the road by some ‘miscreants’ to cause accidents and then extort money in return for pulling a vehicle from a ditch.

The digital media house had based its stories as per the allegations leveled by people from Assam who were travelling the road and crashed on the embankment or drain, police said.

The media while quoting undisclosed people says that in a recent incident, a Guwahati resident was travelling with her relatives to Shillong via the Guwahati-Shillong Road when their car lost control and fell in the drain along the side of the road and soon after the crash, some locals emerged to make quick bucks in the pretext of helping them.

However, the story has evoked sharp reactions on social media platforms with people questioning as to how the private Assam vehicles were the only ones that met with such fate and not the other Assam tourist vehicles and Meghalaya vehicles.

Refuting the allegations, a senior official said,  “They cannot blame us unnecessarily and all their allegations are untrue”.
