SHILLONG | July 11, 2019:

In view of the red warning issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) for the next two days, the Meghalaya Police has issued advisory to the public to remain alert and vigilant.

The state police took to social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to spread this message with an intention to prevent any untoward incidents in view of the inclement weather condition.

Here are some safety tips to prepare yourself for rising waters and what to do in the event of Flash Floods.

** Avoid walking through flood waters and stay away from streams, drains, culverts.

** Avoid driving through flooded areas.

** Stay away from electric poles or power lines to avoid electrocution.

** Students are advised not to cross rivers and streams during heavy rains.

** Tourists visiting tourist spots are advised not to venture into streams, rivers and waterfalls.

It may be mentioned that the state was badly hit by flash floods and landslides with roads being washed away and water level of major rivers almost reaching the danger mark following the continuous rains which lashed the state for the past 5 days now.

The IMD has issued a red warning in Meghalaya for the next two days followed by an orange warning for three more days.

The district administration of all the districts have been directed to stay alert and review, monitor the situation.
