South Garo Hills police on Thursday night arrested two members of a kidnapping gang including its ‘mastermind’ from Gittingbibra village in SGH district of Meghalaya. The recently formed gang was responsible for the kidnapping of a road construction worker a few days ago.

The incident took place at about 11 pm last night after police were informed on the presence of two members, who according to villagers looked suspicious.

“We believe there are more members in the gang and we are on the lookout for them. They have been arrested last night and interrogation of the accused is on,” said SGH superintendent of police, Priyangshu Pandey.

Interestingly, Rongbang Sangma, who is also the supposed mastermind of the gang, has also been arrested earlier on an attempt to murder case against his own wife. He was out on bail when the gang took to dacoities and kidnapping.

Recently the gang are suspected to have kidnapped a road construction worker from the village of Masighat. The worker, Saidul Islam, is suspected to have been released after the payment of ransom to the gang, though there were no independent sources to confirm the information.

The SP added that they suspected more members to be a part of the gang of criminals and the police were on the lookout for them.

Police were yet to provide information more information of the gang.
