In a bid to improve the sports infrastructure in Meghalaya in view of the 2022 National Games, the Union Ministry of Social Justice has sanctioned a total amount of Rs 300 crore for the construction of the National Games stadium at the New Shillong Township.
“We are thankful to the Ministry for sanctioning the required funds for the stadium for the National Games to be hosted by the State in 2022,” Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong told media persons after the Cabinet meeting here today.
When asked about the State’s contribution to the National Games stadium project, he said that the project will be totally funded by the Ministry.
Meanwhile, Tynsong also informed that the State Government, at the same time, has identified 70 acres of land for the construction of Games Villages in Mawdiangdiang adding that the Government would have to mop up its own resources for the Games village.
He also informed that the process of engaging consultants, architects and the CEO of the National Games will be over by November 15.
When asked how can the Government construct the infrastructure within three years when construction of JN Stadium took more than 20 years, Tynsong said that the Government is committed to ensure that the construction of all the infrastructure meant for national games will be completed before the start of the National Games in 2022.
