SHILLONG | April 02, 2019:
NPP president and Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday slammed the national parties for “not respecting and understanding” the sentiments of the people of the Northeast.
“We have seen many situations where the national parties, by sitting in Delhi, decide what is good or bad for the people of the region in general and the State in particular. This attitude of the national parties towards the people of the region is not acceptable,” Conrad said while addressing a public rally organised by the MDA to garner support for the UDP candidate, Jemino Mawthoh held at Polo ground here today.
Referring to the Citizenship Amendment Bill, he said that this is one of the clear examples of how the national parties will never understand the sentiments of the people of the region.
“Interestingly, the Congress party comes up today and claims that they were the ones who stopped the amendment bill from being tabled. I would like the AICC to ask its MPs from Assam whether they had written any letter to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on this,” said Conrad.
Meghalaya Chief Minister said that the different national parties have come up and highlighted different policies to ensure that the region move forward.
“One national party projected the idea of Look East and then another comes with Act East. Years have gone nobody look or acted. The national parties coming to tell us to look and act will not make any difference. It is time that we act on our own to ensure that the NE moves forward. It is time that all of us must understand that our future lies in our own hand. We cannot allow our future to be controlled by the people who are sitting in Delhi,” he said.
Stating that the national parties in the past received a lot of support from the people of this region, he however said that the political situation in the NE is changing with the people starting to look up to the regional forces.
Furthermore, he stated that Delhi remain unmoved when the individual states raised their opposition over the CAB. “But Delhi was bound to listen when all the regional forces jointly raised objection to the bill. The unity of the regional forces will take the NE forward,” he said.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister also urged upon the people to vote for the MDA nominee, Jemino Mawthoh to ensure that the good work of this present Government continues.
Meanwhile, Mawthoh while speaking in the public rally, has attacked the Congress for its campaign to “mislead” the people.
The UDP MP candidate said that the Congress MPs including Vincent H Pala have done nothing despite getting the chance of representing the Shillong Parliamentary seat.
He said that as compared to the Congress MPs, Prof GG Swell who represented the regional parties had done many good things during his stint as an MP.
According to Mawthoh, Prof Swell was instrumental in the creation of NEHU for the benefit of the students of region adding that he was also instrumental in ensuring that the rights of ownership of coal deposits in Jaintia Hills remain with the local people.
Others who were present on the occasion include UDP president, Dr Donkupar Roy and Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong.
