Northeast India, being a gateway to South East Asia, has time and again been projected as an important region for India to strengthen its relationship with neighbouring countries like Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, China, Bhutan and ASEAN countries.

However, besides the growth of multilateral relationships and people-to-people relation, the region is also seen as a gateway to illegally transport goods including drugs from the neighbouring countries to the rest of India through the Northeast.
