To calm the hostile situation in certain areas of Shillong following the Friday Motphran clash, the night curfew from 10 pm till 5 am will continue to remain in force in Shillong agglomeration until further notice, said East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner PS Dkhar on Saturday.

This order which was issued on Saturday evening will continue to remain in force as there is likelihood that breach of peace may spread to other parts of thee city, said the DC.

Indefinite curfew will, however, continue in sensitive areas falling under Lumdiengjri Police Station as the situation is still tense.

Earlier, the Meghalaya Home Minister, James K Sangma has called upon the people to maintain peace even as he stated that the government has met almost all the demands including the arrest of the main accused involved in the assault of three minor boys in Them Iew Mawlong.

“I appeal to all the citizens of Shillong to uphold the peace and avoid from circulating false information on social media platforms,” urged James.

It may be mentioned that police on Friday rounded up several people suspected to be involved in the assault case and arrested the main accused.

The state government on Friday had suspended phone internet services (2G, 3G and 4G) to stop rumours.

The Army has been pushed into action and a flag march was conducted on Friday evening in certain areas of Shillong as security forces grappled with the tense situation. Meanwhile, the Army is not planning to conduct any more flag march so far.

“The army is on standby and will be deployed if the situation warrants. The situation is still tense but under control,” said the Deputy Commissioner, PS Dkhar.

Meanwhile, the parents of the injured boys has given a clarification to put to rest all rumours revolving around their son’s death.

Furthermore, the district administration has promulgated an Order under Section 144 of the CrPC prohibiting the sale of Petrol, Diesel, etc in loose jericans, bottles and any other containers to members of the public by all the Petrol Pumps within East Khasi Hills District.

The order was issued in view of the information as received, of the serious breakdown of law and order in Shillong City (Motphran, Mawkhar and adjoining areas) wherein there is likelihood of serious breach of peace which may lead to acts of arson, targeting vehicles and causing loss of life and property from today and the following days.
