SHILLONG | March 9:
Amid rumours that a suspected case of coronavirus was reported in premier health institute — North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), health officials have clarified that the patient who was admitted in the institute was diagnosed with fever and cough and asserted that no such cases have been reported in the East Khasi Hills district till date.
Dismissing all rumours, a health official today said “Doctors are administering treatment and tests have been conducted and the patient is recovering. I appeal to the people to remain calm and not to pay heed to rumours on social media platforms.”
Meanwhile, officials from NEIGRIHMS have informed that a case of fever and cough has been admitted in the isolation ward in the institute and the patient is stable adding that since he has a travel history to Delhi, “We are taking all precautionary measures; samples have been taken and sent to Kolkata.”
“I advise the public not to panic, to stay calm and to follow the advisory issued by the health department,” said Dr M Marbaniang, State Surveillance, IDSP, government of Meghalaya.
Similarly, the Deputy Commissioner of East Khasi Hills district, Matsiewdor War has urged all users of social media and other public platforms to refrain from posting and sharing any rumours and/or false information which creates panic and anxiety among the general public.
“Lastly in our endeavour to keep the virus at bay, I request the cooperation of the people to stay calm and follow the advisory issued by the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, Health and Family Welfare Department, Government of Meghalaya that was published in the media and circulated in various social media platforms,” War said.

Furthermore, health officials have asked people to follow the advisory issued by the Health department and stated that if people, who are coming from the coronavirus infected countries, have symptoms like fever, cough and difficulty in breathing, to reach out to medical experts so necessary treatment can be given.
