In a tragic incident, a 6-yr old boy identified as Tedious D. Sangma lost his life after he drowned in a pond in Ganol Eco Park, Goiragre in Tura, West Garo Hills on Saturday afternoon.
The deceased boy, who was the son of a battalion personnel of 2nd MLP (Meghalaya Police) — Kerinath B. Marak, went out along with his friends to a pond without authorisation. It was reported that this incident took place at 3 pm today.
Immediately IC Rongram and his team along with the F&ES team, rescuers and divers from Tura were deployed and at 4.50 pm, the body was recovered and sent for Post Mortem. Police informed that an FIR will be registered and investigated into the matter will commence.
Furthermore it was informed that with consultation with District Administration and District Disaster management team, police conducted an enquiry and necessary preventive measures is being instituted.
When asked about the lack of safety measures in the park, police said the management committee of Park had informed that there are many places where no fence/fence broken on the river side facing 2nd Battalion which visitors are barred to venture. But without authorization, the children went ahead for a swim.
