They say elections are expensive affairs. Of course they are and going by the number of cash and liquor seizures made by the State Election department in the last one month is a testimony to the fact that money and alcohol does play an important part in the greatest festival of democracy.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Meghalaya, F.R Kharkongor, since the time the model code of conduct was enforced in the state till date, officials have seized a whopping amount of over Rs 1 crore cash and 30000 ltrs plus liquor from several places in Meghalaya.

It may be reminded that on Feb 14, officials of the election department made two seizures of Rs 14 lakh cash from two vehicles in the State capital in 24 hours. While Rs 13 lakh cash was seized from a vehicle during a routine checking near St. Edmund’s college, the second seizure of Rs 1 lakh cash was seized from another vehicle by the sector officer of Nongthymmai.

On Feb 19, an amount of Rs. 17 lakh was recovered by police in at Umtyra in East Jaintia Hills.

On Feb 20, officials seized cash amounting to around Rs 12 lakh from different locations in Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday.

And on Feb 26, a total amount of Rs 38.67 lakh was seized from a vehicle from Lad Smit, Shillong.
